Massachusetts Open Championship 2010

Wellesley Country Club is pleased to have hosted the 2010 MA Open, which was preceeded by a MA Open Player - Member Tournament. Of the 25 players from the Open that played with the members, 12 made the cut in the MA Open. The low pro in the Player-Member event, Scott Hawley, finished tied for 2nd in the MA Open and the 2nd low pro in the Player-Member event won the MA Open, James Hazen. Ben Spitz, an amateur, also played in the Player-Member and finished one shot behind the low amateur in the MA Open. The Player-Member tournament was very much appreciated by the Players and very much enjoyed by the members. Jeff Phillips and his staff made this a great event. It was so successful that Oak Hill, the site for next year's MA Open, is going to try to imitate the event.
The winning score for the MA Open was 203 or -6 (6 under par). There were only 8 players in the field that broke par for the tournament. The course held its own against these great players. A new competitive course record was set the first day by Jeff Castle with a outstanding score of 63 which is -7 on our Championship Centennial layout. For the WCC connection, DJ Hynes shot 76 75 and just edged out Mike Verde and Todd Anzlovar as low WCC connection. Each competitor in the tournament could not give enough praise and adulation for the condition and playability of the golf course and the work that Bill Sansone and his staff did to prepare the course. The players were also very complementary to the members of WCC for their hospitality in hosting this event. A lot of this can be attributed to all the members, especially the MGA officers in charge, Dick Ganong and Don Page. Many of the pros asked that we host the event every year as they thought this was the best MA Open that they have ever competed in. The MGA staff was also very appreciative of the course conditions and the membership. They left WCC with many great memories. A few also stated that it was one of the best MA Opens that they could remember, the weather obviously helped us a great deal.
